The Municipality of Tučepi consists of the settlement of Tučepi, located between the eastern part of the Osejava cape in the west and Dračevac cove in the eastern part of a 4-kilometre long cove, and a number of hamlets scattered over the slopes of Biokovo Mountain (Gornji Tučepi). Gornji Tučepi includes the following hamlets: Grubišići, Pašalići, Čovići, Podstup, Podspilište, Novaci and Šimići. 1763 inhabitants live in the Municipality in 560 households. The village of Tučepi was mentioned for the first time in the famous Kreševska charter of Juraj Vojsalić in 1434. Its name probably has Illyrian origins and the meaning of spring – a village by the spring. Archaeological finds and name itself prove the historic continuity of the settlement from prehistory, antique until today. Numerous hill forts and tumuli are scattered over the entire region, starting with Staza (a pass that connects Primorje (Littoral) and Zabiokovlje (region behind Biokovo Mountain)), Sride Sela and Potpeć. Based on various finds of walls, coins and graves, Alberto Fortis, a Venetian writer of travelogues, in his work “A journey over Dalmatia” (Venice 1774) placed the antique town of Laurentum in Gornji Tučepi between the hamlets of Čovići and Potpeć. Many sacral structures were built in Tučepi over the centuries, many of which were destroyed, but the subsequent archaeological excavations discovered that new churches were built on their foundations. That is what happened with the church of the Lady’s Birth. It was erected in 1703, demolished in the earthquake in 1962, and after that dismantled and rebuilt in the same form. It was discovered on that occasion that its foundations belonged to an early Christian church. St. Juraj’s (George’s) church was built in the end of the 12th century on the foundations of a former Roman villa rustica from the 2nd century. St. Kate’s church (1541) is located above the houses of Šarić family, and a small St. Rocco’s church (1730) above the old parish house. In Srida Sela in 1891 a church of St. Antun Padovanski (St. Anthony of Padua) was built. (St. Anthony’s holiday is celebrated as the Municipality Day in Tučepi). Church of St. Nikola Tavelić was erected in 1989 just above the Adriatic Tourist Road. The medieval history of Tučepi is connected with Bosnian rulers, the Turks and Venice. There are several towers preserved from the Turkish period (from the 16th to the 18th century), and the most famous ones are the Šarić tower, the Bušelić tower and the Lalić tower. Closer to the sea there are partial remains of a summerhouse from the 18th century, which was built by the noble Grubišić, Ivanišević and Kačić families. In the summerhouse of the abbot Klement Grubišić today is situated “Kaštelet” hotel. The Municipality centre has recently formed around the Tučepi marina for fishing boats and yachts.
